When a layer is produced, it has to be supported by the layer underneath, Otherwise, the filament doesn't hold its form. One of the main limitations with this technique is the handling of overhangs. Using this technique, the 3D object is a succession of 2D layers stacked upon each other. It uses a moving hot head to fuse plastic filament, which will be used to build the object as a succession of thin layers. You have probably already seen a FDM 3D printer. Some of the limitations discussed in this course only apply to this technology. Affordable price comes with some limitations, as we will see. In this course, I will be speaking about Fused Deposition Modeling, FDM for short, which is the most common, and cheapest 3D printing technologie. As you may know, there are many styles of 3D printing technologies. Then, we will use the paper and pen to draw our first design. Designing The Pot: In this class, we will discuss about the principles behind 3D printing, and the design limitations we will have to compose with. When you have gathered everything you need, we can start the project. For this project, you will need : some paper and pen, a computer with FreeCAD installed, A two button mouse + scrollwheel or a pen tablet is also recommended for better experience. This format is a standard used in most 3D printer softwares and is easy to share and to use across multiple softwares. In the second part, we will learn how to use FreeCAD to capture the design into a 3D model using simple constructive method and exports the design to STL file format. We will sketches a desired shape, set the dimensions, divides the design into simple shapes and plans the construction. In the first part, we will design the pot on paper. The class will be divided into two main parts addressing a standard building process. A few mechanical constraints are to be considered, but it gives an overview off the important steps to build any kind of 3D objects. I chose a design composed off simple shapes that can be customized to your needs. Class Project: During this class, we will create a simple plant pot design. I'm happy to have you here and can't wait to see your design come to life. During the process of learning, I encourage you to post your progress in the project Gallery to share your design and get feedback along the away. You don't need any prior knowledge of 3D software, 3D printing or object design to attend this lessons. This course is addressed to anyone who wants to design 3D object for the real world. Not only you will have your own designed 3D pot, but you also will knows the basic elements and procedure to build your own, more complex, design. You will apply this knowledge on the versatile workflow, planning and capturing a design from the concept to the 3D printable STL file export. Before the end of this course, you will understand the principles and limitations of 3D printing. This project will help you learn the process of constructive solid design using FreeCAD software. During this lesson, we will design one of my favorite object for 3D printing : a plants pot. My name is Aurélien, and I've been a teacher in electronics and programming for 6 years and volunteered in a FabLab for two years, I've been designing and printing 3D objects for the last 3 years. Welcome to this class about FreeCAD software basics for 3D printing. If you want to build a plant pot fitted to you own pot, you will need a measurement tool (calliper, ruler…).ġ. You will need to install FreeCAD software from. With this course you will learn how to use it to build your own models or customize other models to your needs. Learning how to design your own objects is a powerful knowledge if you are interested in interior design, repairing broken objects or creating custom tools for specific needs.įreeCAD is a powerful free software designed to help you create mechanical 3D models. Nowadays, 3D printing is a powerful tool to fast build custom and cheap objects. and we will learn how to compose with these in our design planning process.įinally, we will generate a 3D model STL file to be used in the 3D printing process.Īnyone who want to learn 3D constructive solid geometry modeling in order to design simple 3D printable objects. We will address the 3D printing constraints : overhang, maximum slope, bridges, tolerances. To design the pot, we will be using the free computer assisted design software FreeCAD to design a pot fitted to your needs. During this class, you will learn how to take measurements with a calliper and design a custom 3D printable plant pot using 3D solid primitives and operations.
